27 Years and Growing

Last Friday, Ron accepted the Neighborhood Business of the Year award from St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay at the Renaissance Hotel in downtown St. Louis.  It was an honor to be recognized as a business that has made a difference in the landscape of the city.

Upon reflection of the 27 years in the landscape industry we feel blessed, as well as, a little older and wiser.  We have learned a lot in those years about running a small business.   We married in 1987, and have 3 sons, Ben 22, Sam 16, and Ray 14 years old.  Our childbirth stories include Ron sitting bedside working on landscape contracts and me preparing payroll while in labor!  That’s small business.

After several rented office and outdoor storage spaces in St. Louis, Maplewood, Richmond Heights, and Affton we longed for a place to call our own that would connect our office staff and landscape crews and make us all more efficient.   We searched high and low for a property.  Outdoor storage is often zoned near RR tracks, so we followed the tracks around St. Louis looking for property to buy.  We came pretty close a couple of times, but just couldn’t pull the trigger.  When push came to shove, we couldn’t imagine leaving the city.  We lived in the city, our children went to school in the city and so much of what we like to do is in the city that permanently establishing our business in St. Louis city made sense.

In Feb. of 2002, we found out that a property owned by the St. Louis Development Corp. was available. That same week we presented a proposal to the city for purchase and were told that our contract had been accepted.  We were thrilled.

This tumbleweed piece of land at the corner of Southwest and McCausland is what we were so happy to have bought!  This is when the vision of a Landscape Architect comes in really handy.

Through the years we have met so many amazing and talented vendors, subcontractors, architects and nurserymen and we cherish those relationships.  We are most grateful to the wonderful clients who have invited us into their homes and allowed us to be a part of creating environments in which they spend time with their friends and family.  We love working hard for you and appreciate the confidence you place in us!
